What Are Trickle Vents And Why Do Your Windows Need Them?

When it’s time to replace your casement windows, it makes sense to make sure they meet the latest quality standards and national specifications. While effective insulation is often the most important consideration for new double-glazed windows, adequate ventilation is also necessary to ensure that living conditions are suitable for all inhabitants of a property.

If you’re planning to replace your home’s existing windows or to install new windows in an extension, it’s well-worth being aware of the latest changes to Document F of the Building Regulations, which focuses on ventilation. In this blog post, we’ll outline the main changes of which you should be aware and explain how Harveys Windows can help you to comply with the new requirements.

How Are Building Regulations Changing?

Effective from 15th June 2022, the changes to Building Regulations apply to existing homes, extensions and newbuild properties.

Under the revised Document F: Ventilation, all new windows must be fitted with ‘trickle vents’.

What Are trickle Vents?

Trickle vents, which are usually located at the top of a window between the glass and the upper edge of the frame, are adjustable slot-shaped vents that allow fresh air to gently pass, or trickle, into the room.

Available in a range of colours and styles, a trickle vent can be opened or closed easily and is designed to ensure that the flow of air is constant without becoming excessive.

Trickle vents have several benefits for your home:

  • Minimising condensation, particularly on and surrounding the window.
  • Reducing humidity in the room.
  • Allowing fresh air to circulate throughout the room without exposing the inhabitants to external noise.
  • Alleviating certain health conditions, such as asthma.

Trickle vents can be left open 24 hours a day without energy loss and are a more secure option than leaving a window open, even if it is on the night latch.

Do You Need Trickle Vents On windows?

Under the revisions to Document F of the Building Regulations, all rooms with external walls should have background ventilation. A window with a night latch is considered insufficient due to drafts and security risks.

Trickle vents are required on all new windows and doors, including replacement units that didn’t previously feature them. However, you can be confident that the thermal insulation of your windows will not be compromised – an essential feature in times of rising energy prices!
